Wick’s War Memorial

Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission (SHE Transmission) has given its support to Wick Community Council to light up one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks in memory of those who lost their lives during the World Wars.

Overlooking Wick River and Bridge Street, the memorial occupies a prominent position in the town, commemorating the devastating impact that both World Wars had on the community. SHE Transmission and its contractor ABB were delighted to support this community project when approached by Wick Community Council.

Graeme Barclay, Project Director for SHE Transmission said: “While we are working to reinforce and improve the electricity network in Wick and surrounding areas across the north of Scotland, we want to give back and invest in the community as much as we possibly can.

“When the opportunity arose to invest in the local community and bring light to one of the ancient royal burgh’s most notable landmarks, we were delighted to be able to help. We believe this will enhance an already popular feature, particular during the winter months.”

Nicola Sinclair, Secretary of the Royal Burgh of Wick Community Council said: “We are deeply grateful to SHE Transmission, ABB and the Highland Council for their support in making this idea a reality. We’re delighted with the results.

“The various projects undertaken by SHE Transmission in Caithness are a welcome boost to our economy, and it’s heartening to find companies who are willing to contribute to community projects in this way.”

The £1.1bn Caithness – Moray transmission project is a major investment in Scottish electricity infrastructure, renewing and reinforcing the network to provide the capacity required to connect renewable generators in to the grid.
