Dundee electricity reinforcement progressing well

The first section of a £3million investment project by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) to reinforce the electricity network in Dundee has been completed this week.

The existing 132kV cable between Dudhope and Glenagnes substations has delivered electricity to the homes and businesses of Dundee since 1965 and is now being replaced with two new cables, each over a mile long.

SSEN is using the existing conduits to pull the cables between five open excavations before connecting the cables together. This innovative technique removes the need to dig trenches along the route of the cable, minimising disruption to local residents and commuters.

SSEN project manager, Les McLaughlin, explains more:

“As a responsible developer, we were keen to come up with a solution that would minimise any disruption to local residents and businesses. By utilising the existing infrastructure under the streets, we have been able to pull the first section of cable through the open excavations which has greatly reduced the impact on local residents, businesses and road users.

“I would like to thank local residents and road users for their patience whilst we undertake these essential reinforcement works.

“The project is progressing well and we are on schedule to complete the works in late August this year, securing Dundee’s electricity supply for many years to come.”
