SSEN Transmission is seeking views on  its  plans for  new substation at Alyth

SSEN Transmission is hosting  a  pre-application public consultation event in Alyth next Wednesday, 10 July, to share its plans for a new substation and equipment at Haughend, near Meigle, and is looking forward to hearing the views of local residents and businesses.  

The substation was first granted planning permission in December 2012 and following changes in the proposed design, SSEN Transmission will now be submitting a new planning application which takes these changes into account.

This new substation and equipment are part of SSEN Transmission’s plans to upgrade its existing 275kV East Coast network, a project which is essential for providing the capacity necessary to realise the potential of Scotland’s renewable energy resources, while also maintaining long-term security of electricity supply and supporting sustainable economic development.

SSEN Transmission currently has a T-junction tower at Haughend and, as part of this proposed network upgrade, a new substation and equipment to stabilise network voltage (known as ‘reactive compensation’) are being proposed for the location. This will operate at 275kV between 2023 and 2026 but will be built for 400kV capability so that minimal upgrades are required to bring it up to 400kV operation for 2026.

The pre-application consultation is being held in Alyth Town Hall on Wednesday, 10 July between 2-7pm.
