SSEN Transmission welcomes the approval of its Alyth substation planning application by Perth and Kinross Council.

The new substation will be built on the outskirts of Alyth and will form part of the reinforcement of the East Coast transmission network to enable new generation to link to Great Britain’s transmission system, allowing the onward supply of power to centres of demand.

Commenting on the key milestone for the East Coast transmission reinforcement, Lead Project Manager, Archie Munro, said:

“We welcome the decision by Perth and Kinross Council to grant consent for Alyth substation, once constructed it will play a key role in unlocking the East Coast’s renewable electricity potential.

“As a responsible developer, we will continue to engage with the local community before, during and after the construction of the substation, which is a critical piece of network infrastructure and will play an important part in the transition to a low carbon economy.”

Ahead of the commencement of construction, public road improvement works will be carried out. These woks will involve the widening of Balendoch Road between the junction to the B954 and the location of a new entrance to the substation, as well as the demolition and reinstatement of the disused railway bridge. These works are expected to start in September 2020 and will be complete by March 2021, with construction commencing on the substation in April 2021.

SSEN Transmission’s community liaison team will be working closely with all stakeholders to keep them informed of project activities and timelines during construction.
