  • £1,500 in donations to local foodbank Food for Thought

  • £3,000 donated to Alyth Christmas Lights Association

Teams working on the development of overhead electricity lines and a new substation near Alyth are getting into the festive spirit by donating over £4,500 for two local causes this Christmas.

SSEN Transmission, Siemens BAM and Balfour Beatty teams made a joint donation of approximately £1,500 to Food for Thought, the local foodbank in Alyth, which serves as a vital lifeline for families most in need.  The donation included food items, household products and Christmas-themed items, as well as a new chest freezer to help reduce food waste and ensure the foodbank is equipped to help provide for people when they need it most.  £500 was also included in the donation for the foodbank to use to purchase supplies or equipment to benefit the foodbank in the future.

Teams from SSEN Transmission and their Principal Contractors visited the volunteers at Food for Thought on Monday to help deliver the new chest freezer and donations of food, as well as to meet some of the volunteers running the vital scheme for those most in need.

Earlier this month SSEN Transmission, Siemens BAM and Balfour Beatty also donated £3,000 to the Alyth Christmas Lights Association to contribute towards the cost of this year’s festive lights display throughout the village, which helps bring extra festive joy to the community.

Lead Project Manager Archie Munro said: “Supporting the local community in which we work is very important to us, and we’re delighted to make donations of over £4,500 to two very important causes in Alyth.

“Foodbanks such as Food for Thought provide an essential emergency service to people most in need, so we’re really pleased that we can help out the brilliant team of volunteers there by covering the cost of a new chest freezer and donating additional food items to help at this time of year, as well as leaving a further £500 cash donation to contribute towards additional items or equipment in the future.

“Making a £3,000 contribution to the Alyth Christmas Lights Association to help cover the cost of the wonderful festive light displays in the village was a great thing to do as we know how much the displays are welcomed by the community – and I hope seeing the village lit up at this time of year will help bring some extra festive joy.”

Darren Gracey, Team Leader at Food for Thought Alyth, said:  “I can’t begin to thank the team enough for their very generous donation. The impact it has made already is amazing and will continue to help so many more individuals and families still.  The freezer that has been donated will drastically reduce food waste because things can now be frozen.  We truly appreciate all of the support.”

SSEN Transmission’s scheme at Alyth includes the development of the Alyth substation as well as a programme of works to upgrade the associated overhead line network. The scheme is part of a wider project to upgrade the East Coast Transmission network, and once complete it will enable the connection of new renewable generation to the grid, helping to facilitate the transmission to net zero emissions.  The Alyth scheme is on course to be completed in winter 2023.
