Investing in our future workforce
SSEN Transmission is delighted to announce that they have partnered with the 5% club, a dynamic movement of 650 employers working to drive ‘earn and learn’ skills training opportunities across the UK.
In simple terms, that means we are pledging to ensure at least 5% of our workforce in Transmission are recruited in ‘earn as you learn’ roles such as graduate, trainee and apprenticeship programmes.
The charitable organisation consists of large and small employers from a wide range of sectors who want to make a difference, fill the skills gap and support the UK’s ability to compete in increasingly tough global markets.
We caught up with our HR Business Partner, Allie Walker, to hear her thoughts on our recent pledge:
“I am delighted that we’ve kicked off the process to joining the 5% club and demonstrate our commitment to increasing the number of ‘earn and learn’ roles to help support and educate our workforce.
"As you know, we’ve recently set ourselves an ambitious target of recruiting a further 400 roles by March 2023 to help us expand our transmission network in the north of Scotland. We know the current job market is extremely competitive, and we believe this partnership will also provide an opportunity to learn from other companies and help expand our approach to fill these recruitment gaps.
"Ultimately, we want to offer a variety of routes into employment, which combine study with practical experience and enable individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required to embark on a fulfilling career in Transmission.”
We still have some work to do to achieve full 5% club accreditation. We’re currently going through a rigorous audit process that reviews our current ‘earn as you learn’ recruitment model and will award us with a Gold, Silver or Bronze rating. We expect this process to conclude in the coming months and we will share an update on the outcome then.
In the meantime, we’re continuing to work hard to deliver a network for net zero, and we’re creating 400 new jobs over the next year to help us do this. Visit the SSE Careers page here to sign up for job alerts and view all of our latest job vacancies – come and join our team.
