Responding to the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s commitment to accelerate electricity grid investments, Rob McDonald, SSEN Transmission’s Managing Director, said:

“The need for significant investment in new electricity transmission network in Scotland and across the rest of GB has never been clearer and we welcome the Prime Minister’s clear recognition of the importance of accelerating grid investment as a crucial step in reaching our net zero and energy security targets. Our £10bn Pathway to 2030 programme of investments across the north of Scotland will be key to connecting and transporting the renewable energy required to help deliver a cleaner, more secure and affordable energy system for homes and businesses across Great Britain

“The Prime Minister’s clear support for accelerating investment in new grid infrastructure follows on from the Scottish Parliament’s Net Zero Committee’s Report, published last week, where this cross-party group of MSPs also emphasised the need for grid infrastructure development in enabling renewable energy and delivering energy security.

“At SSEN Transmission, we remain committed to work with all stakeholders to accelerate the build-out of the low-carbon electricity infrastructure that will be needed to get us to net zero, particularly those communities hosting this infrastructure where we will do all we can to minimise and mitigate community and environmental impacts whilst also maximising the significant economic opportunities our investments will unlock across the north of Scotland."
