SSEN Transmission submits Banniskirk Hub planning application to The Highland Council

SSEN Transmission has submitted a planning application to The Highland Council for a new 400kV substation and high voltage direct current (HVDC) converter station in the Spittal area, known as the Banniskirk Hub.

The project is a key upgrade to the transmission network in the north of Scotland, helping deliver high voltage, clean renewable power for connection to homes and businesses across the UK – helping meet Scotland and the UK’s net zero and energy security ambitions.  

The Banniskirk Hub will connect to the proposed 400kV overhead line connection between Spittal and Beauly, and to the existing Spittal 275kV Substation. It will include a new outdoor 400kV Air Insulated Switchgear (AIS) substation, and an HVDC converter station that will help transport offshore renewable energy to demand centres throughout the UK.

Public consultation events that were held in relation to the project have helped shape proposals which include enhanced landscape and screening measures and optimising of access roads.
