  • Proposed Netherton Hub a key element of electricity transmission network upgrades supporting clean power and energy security ambitions

  • Public invited to provide feedback on local connection plans

People in the Peterhead area are being invited to attend consultation events that will share plans for new electricity network connections to the proposed Netherton Hub – a strategic development to the west of the town that will play a key role in support of national energy security and clean power targets.

The events will consult on plans to establish a new overhead line tie-in between the Netherton Hub and existing New Deer-Peterhead 400kV overhead line, and the removal and rebuild of a section of the overhead line between Netherton Hub and the Peterhead 400kV substation in Boddam.

Staff from SSEN Transmission will also share information on a proposed underground cable route between Netherton Hub and Sandford Bay, as part of the Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) project which aims to establish a new subsea High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) link between Peterhead and Lincolnshire.

The drop-in events take place on Wednesday 5 March, at the following times and locations:

  • 10am – 12.30pm, Buchan Braes Hotel, Boddam, Peterhead, AB42 3AR
  • 3pm – 7pm, Longside Parish Church Hall, Inn brae, Longside, AB42 4XN

The proposed Netherton Hub forms a critical part of SSEN Transmission’s £20bn investment programme to upgrade the electricity transmission network in the north of Scotland and will comprise two new substations and two new HVDC converter stations supporting onshore and offshore clean energy projects.

The tie-in with the existing New Deer-Peterhead overhead line is required to connect the Hub’s planned 400kV substation to the transmission network, while the replacement and rebuild project will increase the capacity of the New Deer-Peterhead route.

Gillian Doig, Community Liaison Manager for SSEN Transmission, said: “The proposed Netherton Hub is a key development that will support the delivery of clean, renewable energy to homes and businesses across the UK and play a major role in helping meet national clean energy and energy security ambitions.

“We know that people are keen to understand more about local connections to the Hub, and these drop-in consultation events will provide an opportunity for people to comment on our proposals to install a new tie-in to our existing New Deer-Peterhead overhead line, as well as plans to rebuild a section of the line.

“We will also be sharing details of plans to install an underground cable between the Hub and Sandford Bay as part of the EGL3 project, which will enable the transmission of huge amounts of clean energy to demand centres across the UK via a 500km+ subsea HVDC connection.

“We’d encourage anyone with an interest in our proposals to come along to these events, where our specialist project staff will be available to speak about our plans in more detail.”
