SSEN Transmission, the Perth-based electricity company responsible for the high-voltage transmission network across the north of Scotland, has become the latest organisation to proudly pledge their support for the next generation via the Young Person’s Guarantee.
With National Apprenticeship Week taking place this week, SSEN Transmission is pleased to reaffirm its ongoing dedication to nurturing young talent in Scotland’s energy sector, providing valuable employment opportunities, and contributing to the development of the next generation of professionals across the energy industry in the north of Scotland.
The Young Person’s Guarantee is a joint commitment to provide opportunities for all 16-24 year olds in Scotland through jobs, apprenticeships, further and higher education, training programmes and volunteering. Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) plays a key part in its delivery.
Commitment to Building Skills and Career Opportunities
SSEN Transmission’s pledge involves a multifaceted approach to supporting the Young Persons Guarantee, including:
- Offering a range of paid apprenticeships and graduate schemes across various departments.
- Strengthening partnerships with local schools, colleges, and universities across Scotland to create more inclusive and accessible routes into the workforce for young people.
- Creating work-based learning opportunities to help young people gain valuable experience and insight into the energy and infrastructure industry in the north of Scotland.
Strengthening the workforce of the future
SSEN Transmission is in a rapid period of growth, with the company recently celebrating its 2000th team member joining the business and growing their employee headcount by fivefold in just five years.
Last year saw a record number of young people join SSEN Transmission’s Graduate Scheme, with 46 people getting started in the bespoke two-year programme.
The Young Person’s Guarantee pledge comes as SSEN Transmission continues to develop its Pathway to 2030 programme, a £20 billion package of electricity grid upgrades across the north of Scotland consisting of new overhead lines, substations, convertor stations and subsea links to help the country’s ambitious clean energy targets and secure power for generations.
Allie Walker, Director of HR for SSEN Transmission, commented: “We are proud to pledge our support to the Young Person’s Guarantee, which reaffirms our commitment to providing young people with the skills, training, and opportunities they need to succeed in a career in green energy.
“We’re investing £20 billion to upgrade the transmission network across the north of Scotland by 2030, and to deliver this we need to have the right people and skills within our teams, which is why we recognise the importance of investing in the next generation to help us reach this ambitious task.
“This pledge is an important step in ensuring that young talent is equipped to thrive in the energy sector, and we’re excited to welcome the next generation to help us build a network for net zero.
“With National Apprenticeship Week taking place this week, we’d encourage any young people considering a career in green energy to visit our website and find out more about what early career opportunities there are for them across the north of Scotland.”
Margo Milne, Director, DYW North East, said: “It is a pleasure to welcome SSEN Transmission as a Young Person’s Guarantee pledge partner.
“This is a very positive announcement, which will allow us to build on our existing joint activities.
“We look forward to working closely with the SSEN Transmission team to help young people gain early insights into the skills requirements and opportunities associated with careers in green energy.”
