Overview
Project Update
This project which is looking to upgrade the existing Fetteresso substation to 400kV is not related to our proposed new substation project (Hurlie) in Fetteresso Forest (previously known as Fiddes 400kV substation) that makes up part of the Kintore to Tealing projects.
Any and all queries regarding the Kintore to Tealing projects should be directed to these projects Community Liaison Manager via TKUP@sse.com. There is also a dedicated project website for the substation, which you can access here.
About the Project
The existing Fetteresso substation was fully constructed in 2016 to operate at a voltage of 275kV, with the intention of upgrading to 400kV in the future. The aim of this new project is to upgrade the substation to operate at 400kV. The project elements include:
- Replacement of existing 275kV transformer with 400kV transformers;
- Replacement of existing 275kV equipment such as Surge Arrestors and Capacitive Voltage Transformers with 400kV equivalents;
- Any associated works (i.e. nomenclature changes, protection updates, etc.)
There are plans to upgrade the transmission system in the north east and on the east coast of Scotland to 400kV over the next decade. In order to facilitate this, we are proposing to upgrade the existing overhead line network in the region and install new substations at various points.
The construction works will be contained to the existing site boundary and are expected to take place from approximately summer 2024 through to late 2026.
Why is the Project Required?
These works are required to allow increased generation capacity access to the transmission system, while keeping the network fully operational and compliant with all necessary technical standards. Without these necessary reinforcements, the network cannot facilitate all generation connections.
Upgrading the existing substation at Fetteresso addresses this issue and in effect increases the network's efficiency and capability. Power sharing across these circuits becomes more important as generation load increases on the system.
Community Engagement
Throughout the life of our projects, we aim to work positively with local communities and keep people informed about what we are doing. This is particularly important when we are developing a proposal and we want to understand what local people think about our plans.
We endeavour to take the time to discuss proposals with local community councils, encourage engagement from the wider community and listen to the feedback we receive.
We will do our best to answer any questions and address issues or concerns that are raised with us.
When our project progresses into construction, we will continue working closely with the local community to ensure that our work has as little impact on the lives of those living and working in the area and have as many long term positive effects as possible.
How we’re embracing artificial intelligence (AI)
We intend to use AI to assist our experienced teams in the analysis of your feedback, so we can categorise key points raised more quickly. You can learn more about how we’re utilising AI on this dedicated web page.
