About the Project
The project consists of:
- A new 132/33kV Grid Supply Point (GSP) at Gremista with a 22km double circuit 132kV connection, which will be a combination of both underground cable and overhead line, between Gremista GSP and Kergord substation.

Why is the Project Required?
The Gremista GSP, and the 132kV connection to the Kergord substation will connect Shetland to the GB electricity network for the first time. The GSP will also provide the connection point for a new battery to help support Shetland’s ongoing energy requirements and enable Lerwick Power Station to move to standby mode, further supporting the decarbonisation of Shetland.
Community Engagement
Throughout the life of our projects, we aim to work positively with local communities and keep people informed about what we are doing. This is particularly important when we are developing a proposal and we want to understand what local people think about our plans.
We endeavour to take the time to discuss proposals with local community councils, encourage engagement from the wider community and listen to the feedback we receive.
We will do our best to answer any questions and address issues or concerns that are raised with us.
When our project progresses into construction, we will continue working closely with the local community to ensure that our work has as little impact on the lives of those living and working in the area and as many long term positive effects as possible.

Strong on Safety - World's Strongest Brothers talk safety in Shetland
The World’s Strongest Brothers – Tom and Luke Stoltman – headed to Shetland this weekend to spread the message of looking after yourself and others, both at home, at work or in the gym.
The Stoltman Brothers, including three-time World’s Strongest Man Champion Tom and two-time Europe’s Strongest Man Luke - were invited to spend the weekend in Shetland by SSEN Transmission, who helped organise a series of community events for the brothers to attend to spread their inspirational story and the importance of wellbeing.

SSEN Transmission supports the Shetland Celebration of STEM for second year
SSEN Transmission and SSE Renewables are looking forward to taking part in an educational day of science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) activities at the Shetland Museum in Lerwick on Wednesday 8 May.
The interactive event which has been organised by Prosper will involve local schools taking part in STEM challenges with representatives from various local businesses on hand to provide advice and guidance.
Over the course of the day, pupils will be asked to get involved in a fictional scenario called The Power Path Challenge, which involves building a marble run to represent a subsea cable transferring electricity from renewable sources, just like a giant undersea extension cord!
Schools that take part will be provided with free kits to enable them to build a model which will be tested on the day. The winning team will receive a trophy and £50 to spend on STEM supplies.
SSEN Transmission and SSE Renewables are committed to working with young people to help inspire and develop the future workforce and provide a pathway for school leavers into the wider energy sector.

Works begin on GSP and 132kV connection
SSEN Distribution officially handed over the platform of the Gremista GSP to SSEN Transmission in late summer 2023 and Transmission's principle contractor, OMSI (joint venture partners Omexom and Morgan Sindall Infrastructure) mobilised on Shetland. OMSI are responsible for the construction of the GSP and Morgan Sindall are delivering the underground cable works, both packages are engaging with several local contractors including EMN and CW Johnson. NorPower are delivering the overhead lines that make up part of the 132kV connection from Kergord to Gremista GSP.
