About the Project
Kintore Substation is situated approximately 20km north west of Aberdeen and is a critical site on the electricity transmission network. It acts as the connection hub for many other 275kV and 132kV sites in the north east and facilitates power transfer down the east coast of Scotland.
The 132kV equipment at Kintore is nearing the end of its operational life. Asset data and analysis has shown the asset should be replaced, which has been agreed by the energy regulator Ofgem. The replacement of the 132kV substation will provide a more flexible busbar configuration, which will deliver a more robust and reliable 132kV network in the area. One of our regulatory obligations is to ensure a safe and reliable network, to fulfil this it is necessary to upgrade the 132kV equipment at Kintore Substation.
There is a separate project to construct a new 400kV substation to the east of the current substation at Kintore. This project was granted planning approval in July 2021 and construction commenced in August 2021.

Community Engagement
Throughout the life of our projects, we aim to work positively with local communities and keep people informed about what we are doing. This is particularly important when we are developing a proposal and we want to understand what local people think about our plans.
We endeavour to take the time to discuss proposals with local community councils, encourage engagement from the wider community and listen to the feedback we receive.
We will do our best to answer any questions and address issues or concerns that are raised with us.
When our project progresses into construction, we will continue working closely with the local community to ensure that our work has as little impact on the lives of those living and working in the area and as many long term positive effects as possible.

Temporary Extension to Working Hours
From Thursday 20 of June the working hours for our Principal Contractor Omexom working at Kintore substation site, Leylodge will be temporarily extended.
The new temporary working hours that have been agreed by Aberdeenshire Council will be 06:00 hours 20 June to 17:00 hours Saturday 22 June. During this period the works will be ongoing 24 hours per day.
The works that will be carried out during these additional hours will be within the new 132kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation building and will be a pour of the mezzanine floor.There will also be tower lights on while the works are ongoing.
The extended working hours are necessary for the project to meet grid connection dates and reduce the longevity of the overall project. SSEN Transmission apologises for any inconvenience that these changes may cause to the local community and thank you for your continued understanding as our project progresses.

2023 Festive Period Site Closure
Works on site will pause for the 2023 festive period with the site closing from 23 December 2023 until 3 January 2024.
Although the site will be closed for all construction workers during this period, security will remain in place.

Kintore 132Kv Asset Replacement - Update March 2023
The Kintore 132kV asset replacement is progressing well with the project transitioning from design refinement into the construction delivery phase. Pre-construction works including site clearance/establishment has started to allow earthworks ‘soil stripping’ and ‘cut and fill’ operations to commence towards the end of March 2023. Looking forward into summer 2023 the project will be progressing with the installation of drainage systems and construction of the building platform to allow the 132kV Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) building to be erected. -
Planning Application Update
SSEN Transmission welcome the decision made by Aberdeenshire Council on Thursday the 6th of October 2022 to grant permission to proceed with our proposed replacement 132kV substation at Leylodge, near Kintore. As a responsible developer, we will continue to engage with the local community before, during and after the construction of the substation, which is a critical piece of network infrastructure and will directly contribute towards our goal of 100% transmission reliability for homes and businesses. The replacement substation will also reduce the volume of SF6 on the network from the use of innovative non-SF6 equipment, which will contribute towards our goal of a one third reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
Construction is due to commence on the replacement 132kV substation at the end of March 2023. We will ensure that we keep all stakeholders informed of the timelines associated with the project as contractors are appointed, and construction programmes are further defined. Planning Application Submitted
We are delighted to confirm we have now submitted our planning application to Aberdeenshire Council regarding our proposal to erect an enclosed 132kV Gas Insulated Switchgear Substation in Leylodge. Closure of Feedback Period
The feedback period following the recent public consultation events held in October is now closed. All responses received will now be reviewed ahead of submission of a planning application. -
Feedback Period Open
The project team would like to extend thanks to all members of the public and interested parties who took the time to come along to our public consultation events that were held on the 19th of October and to those that visited our virtual online consultation and submitted questions to the team via the live text chat function on the 20th of October. We hope you found the consultations informative and beneficial. If you were unable to join any of the events, all the content that was presented on our proposals can be found within the project documentation tab of this website. We encourage those with an interest to share their views and feedback on our proposals by completing a feedback form. The feedback period is open until 22nd of November 2021.
Kintore 132kV Asset Replacement Project - Public Consultation Events
SSEN Transmission are hosting public consultation events to present our proposals for the replacement of the 132kV equipment at the existing Kintore substation. Events will be held both face to face along with a virtual online consultation exhibition and would like to invite all interested parties to attend in order for us to gain views and feedback on our proposals. A face to face public exhibition will take place on Tuesday the 19th of October at Kintore Public Hall between 2pm-7pm. This is an open door drop in session open to all members of the public and interested parties.A further two online consultation events will take place on Wednesday the 20th of Octoberbetween 1pm-3pm & 5-7pm.
