Overview
About the Project
This project covers the connection of the proposed Loch Kemp Storage Hydro Scheme to the existing Foyers Substation.
An application for consent under Section 36 of the Electricity Act 1989 was submitted by Statera Ltd in November 2023 to construct and operate a pumped storage hydro (PSH) at Loch Kemp, on the eastern bank of Loch Ness. A decision on this application from Scottish Ministers is currently awaited.
Should the proposed Loch Kemp Storage Scheme (potential capacity of up to 600MW) be granted consent, it would require connection to the electricity transmission network at the existing Foyers Switching Station. It is proposed that this would be achieved via the construction and operation of a new 275 kV underground cable (UGC).
The project would comprise of a new switching station located close to Dell Farm. From there we propose to install approximately 7.5km of underground cable to the existing Foyers 275kv Substation. Construction of the project is expected to start in 2028 with the project completed in October 2030.
Why is the Project Required?
SSEN Transmission are required to provide a connection to the Statera Energy Loch Kemp Pumped Storage Hydro (PSH) Scheme near Foyers, Highlands.
Under our Network Operators Licence we are required to deliver the connection in a technically efficient, co-ordinated and economic manner, whilst having the least practicable impact on people and the environment.
The connection for Loch Kemp PSH is to be provided at 275 Kilovolts (kV) and is currently proposed to be via underground cable.
Further information on the proposed Pumped Hydro Scheme can be found on Statera Energy's project website (please note: this links to an external website; SSEN Transmission is not responsible for any external content linked to from our website).
Community Engagement
Throughout the life of our projects, we aim to work positively with local communities and keep people informed about what we are doing. This is particularly important when we are developing a proposal and we want to understand what local people think about our plans.
We endeavour to take the time to discuss proposals with local community councils, encourage engagement from the wider community and listen to the feedback we receive.
We will do our best to answer any questions and address issues or concerns that are raised with us.
When our project progresses into construction, we will continue working closely with the local community to ensure that our work has as little impact on the lives of those living and working in the area and as many long term positive effects as possible.
