Overview
About the Project
We are proposing the installation of a new indoor 275kV Switchgear building and the installation of two additional 275/132kV Super Grid Transformers within the Tomatin Substation compound.
This project will enable the connection of onshore renewable energy to Great Britain’s transmission network.
A connection offer has been given to Highland Wind Farm, proposed by the developer Ampyr Energy UK Development Ltd. Alongside this there are other proposed renewable developments within the surrounding area, and to facilitate these we require an extension of the existing Tomatin Substation by approximately 100 metres in width and 110 metres in length (and no greater than 150 x 160m), which will be integrated with the existing site layout.
Why is the Project Required?
As the transmission license holder in the north of Scotland, we have a duty under Section 9 of the Electricity Act 1989 to facilitate competition in the generation and supply of electricity. We have obligations to offer non-discriminatory terms for connection to the transmission system, both for new generation and for new sources of electricity demand.
Subject to planning consent, SSEN Transmission are required to provide a connection to 168.2MW Highland Windfarm near Tomatin, within the Highland Council area.
Under our network operators license we are required to deliver the connection in a technically efficient, coordinated and economic manner, whilst having the least practicable impact on people and the environment.
The works are necessary to provide sufficient capacity for future connections to renewable energy sources. In order to facilitate such connections an extension is required to the existing Tomatin substation platform to accommodate the additional electrical equipment.
Community Engagement
Throughout the life of our projects, we aim to work positively with local communities and keep people informed about what we are doing. This is particularly important when we are developing a proposal and we want to understand what local people think about our plans.
We endeavour to take the time to discuss proposals with local community councils, encourage engagement from the wider community and listen to the feedback we receive.
We will do our best to answer any questions and address issues or concerns that are raised with us.
When our project progresses into construction, we will continue working closely with the local community to ensure that our work has as little impact on the lives of those living and working in the area and as many long term positive effects as possible.
How we’re embracing artificial intelligence (AI)
We intend to use AI to assist our experienced teams in the analysis of your feedback, so we can categorise key points raised more quickly. You can learn more about how we’re utilising AI on this dedicated web page.
