Overview
Public Consultation - November 2024
We are holding a statutory pre-application consultation event for our proposed Foyers Substation Works project. The pre-application process is a key first step in the Town and Country planning process for this planning application.
The event will be held on:
Date: 28 November 2024
Time: 3pm – 7pm
Venue: The Wildside Centre, Whitebridge, IV2 6UN
The project is required to upgrade the two existing transformer assets at Foyers Power Station which are coming to the end of their operational life and need replacing.
The project will consist of an upgrade and extension of the existing transformer compound at Foyers Power Station, a replacement underground cable and an extension at Foyers Switching Station.
Please note: In April 24, we held a statutory pre-application consultation event for this project, however due to a change in land take requirements around Foyers Power Station, we are now required to re-start this process.

About the Project
The project is to replace the existing transformers at the Foyers pumped storage hydro electric power station substation. This includes replacing the existing underground cable connection between the substation and the existing Foyers switching station with a new underground cable.
To accommodate this upgrade the Foyers switching station also requires an extension on one side.
Why is the Project Required?
The works are to enable continued export of renewable electricity generation from the Power Station to the National Grid Transmission network, driven by operational requirements and asset condition assessments of the affected existing transformers serving the Foyers Power Stations.
The two existing transformer assets at Foyers Power Station, which convert the 18kV output to 275kV for export to the Transmission network are coming to the end of their operational life and need replacing. The consequent deterioration in their condition poses a risk of failure, meaning the power station would no longer be able to generate renewable energy risking reliability of supply to customers.
Community Engagement
Throughout the life of our projects, we aim to work positively with local communities and keep people informed about what we are doing. This is particularly important when we are developing a proposal and we want to understand what local people think about our plans.
We endeavour to take the time to discuss proposals with local community councils, encourage engagement from the wider community and listen to the feedback we receive.
We will do our best to answer any questions and address issues or concerns that are raised with us.
When our project progresses into construction, we will continue working closely with the local community to ensure that our work has as little impact on the lives of those living and working in the area and as many long term positive effects as possible.
How we’re embracing artificial intelligence (AI)
We intend to use AI to assist our experienced teams in the analysis of your feedback, so we can categorise key points raised more quickly. You can learn more about how we’re utilising AI on this dedicated web page.
